Institute for African American Studies
September 2004 - December 2004
August 2007 (Conversion to Web Standards)
The Institute for African American Studies is an excellent example of what's possible when a site's design can draw upon a vast history of visual language and imagery. This design attempts to draw upon the whole of African American history to inspire and motivate future scholars. The homepage features a slowly moving parade of the Heroes and Heroines of African American history. While the homepage features prominent americans, the site design continuously references African history and culture in small ways. The background pattern is made of Adinkra symbols, common in Western African societies that represent various concepts. The secondary pages of the site use the ancient languages of African civilization as backgrounds for the site titles. The overall effect is to clearly communicate the historical nature of the institute, while at the same time providing an unmistakably unique visual style.
